The serial number is 406xxx dating this from the early to mid 1960’s I believe. The bell is sterling silver, as is the original neck as well. This model was famously played by Cannonball Adderly, and perhaps Charlie Parker as well, on alto, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Yusef Lateef, and Johnny Griffin among others on tenor.
These horns have I believe, a larger bore than Selmers for example, giving them a broader, more spread sound that is felt to be very big and as they say ‘cutting’. The Silversonic is said to be brighter than the Super 20 due to the silver neck, and I know they sound different but I don’t know if that is a brightness difference. It definitely can be heard though.
This one is a players horn, not for the closet collector. The lacquer finish is 100% original. Most of the body is in fine shape, there has been some work done to bow, a few dents here and there. It should be visible in the photos. That is a cosmetic issue and why this horn is being priced lower accordingly. Silversonics are commanding a higher price these days, so if you are a player and looking to get one that will PLAY well rather than just look well and you want to spend less money, this would be a good way to go.
The pads are a mix of old and new, it does play at the moment but for me with a professional standard for setups I would say you’ll want to have them done as a consistent job in the future to get it to make the sound it is supposed to. Original case is included. I want this horn to go to someone who really is going to play it, just sitting here at the moment as I have too many things to deal with. Thanks
